How Much Does it Cost to Surf?
Surfing is not cheap, but also not crazy expensive. All you really need is a surfboard wich you can buy for $350, but the cost depends on the temperature of the water you want to surf. You will most likely need a wetsuit, and also a surfboard leash and some surf wax, and if you are a complete beginner you might also think about some surf lessons.
Don´t know where to begin? Let us help you by breaking down the costs of surfing.
Surfboard
Beginner Surfboards
You can buy a complete beginner foam board for approximately $350. This type of surfboard floats easily, offers a lot of stability, and as the board has a soft surface you (and the board) are protected from bumps and bruises.
We do not recommend buying a small and expensive shortboard in the beginning. As a beginner foam is your friend, so choose a big and inexpensive surfboard. As you progress you will get a better understanding of what type of board that suits your need.
Normal Surfboards
A normal surfboard is not coated with soft foam. It has a Polyester core and it is coated with thin layers of fiberglass. A surfboard like this might set you back $400-$500 dollars, but a top model from Firewire can cost up to $1000.
Longboards
Longboards, as the name suggests, are longer and more materials are used. This is why longboards are often slightly more expensive ($500-600). Mostly longboards cost only a fraction more, but some longboards can cost up to $1600.
Wetsuit
If you surf in colder waters, then you will need a wetsuit. A wetsuit allows you to stay in the water for a long time without freezing. A wetsuit cost between $100 – $400, but if you need a super flexible, yet warm wetsuit with a hoodie they can cost $600.
If you do not know anything about wetsuits read our article The beginner wetsuit guide. Another good idea is to ask the local surfers as they are guaranteed to know which wetsuit is perfect for your local climate.
Surf Accesories
Tail Pad
If you buy a new board (that is not a soft-top) you will need a tail pad. This stabilizes your back foot and keeps your foot from slipping off the surfboard. A tail pad costs $40, and you will rarely find a big difference in quality and functionality.
Surf Wax
Surf wax is the smothered across the upper part of your surfboard. This also provides stability for your front foot and keeps your feet from slipping off. Surf wax usually costs between $2.5- $5, depending on the brand.
Surf wax is usually divided into categories for different water temperatures, so make sure to check how warm the water is at your local surf break.
Surf Leash
A surfboard leash is attached to the surfboard in one end, and your back foot in the other. It is a crucial element in water safety, as the leash prevents you from being separated from your surfboard. A leash costs between $20-$50.
