The Highs And Lows Of Dating A Surfer

surfing

If you continually find sand in the corners of your home or on the welcome mat, if you have found your car being a ferry for boards or spending way too much time at the beach, chances are you’re dating a surfer. So now you find yourself in a brand new territory or perhaps you’ve been in this situation for a while, where are we referring to exactly, well you’re dating a surfer or an extreme sports lover no less.  While you may think this is going to be the same as the time you dated that gym-freak, we have news for you, it’s nothing like that whatsoever and therefore, we decided to help you prep for your future with the highs and lows of dating a surfer.

You’ve probably already thought of the idyllic beach wedding, with the perfect boho chic dress, what you probably didn’t imagine was the groom running desperately to the alter after having had an early morning surf session. Well at least, he didn’t hit the pubs, is probably something that my father would volunteer but if you don’t have a dad with a dry sense of humor we are here to calm your nerves. Chances are that won’t be your wedding day, however, there is something to be said about the relationship that extreme sports enthusiasts or adrenaline junkies and their particular sport is insanely strong.

And while you may find yourself going on a lot of exotic holidays to far off and unusual places, the chances are that luxury will not be as high of a priority as chasing your partner’s particularly high. Slumming it is a very likely reality, but so are truly beautiful beaches and the most enviable Instagram moments. Another benefit of dating surfers is that in order for surfers to be able to stay safe while out in the water, they have to be vigilant, calm and focused, which we all know are absolutely crucial factors for relationships. Also, you need not fear of being a damsel or gentleman in distress because let’s just face it, if your partner can face a death-defying situation, they can deal with anything from the tax man and TV licenses to conquering In-law dinners and community meetings. Cause, yes we all sometimes need a certain level of help from a badass at some point in our lives.

Cuts, scrapes, bruises and slight gashes are part and parcel of the sport, so if your new partner is un-phased at the bruise on your knee you earned from attacking the wall when you were supposed to be heading straight down the corridor, don’t take it personally, they are just used to taking on more bodily pain than most.  If you are rather tired of the rat race or simply hoping to spend more time in and amongst the natural world, surfers are your perfect partner, considering they spend so much time in the water becoming one with the waves and the ocean itself, there really is no one better to spend time in nature with than surfers.

However, one noticeable downside is that your early morning lie-ins may become something of a distant memory, early morning wake up calls could happen if the tides are right and before you know it you’re hearing rustling and so-called ‘quiet’ changing before 5 am without so much as a care for your beauty sleep. What is worse still is that you may not be able to head back to sleep after their early morning wake up call. Furthermore, traveling with an extreme sports enthusiast tends to mean lots of gear and limited luggage space for anything else, which can mean some negotiations. But as we have mentioned before, the chance to see the world and explore endless beaches is a not to be missed opportunity that can only be made better when with the one you love.

Dating a surfer or any kind of sports enthusiast can be challenging at times, the demands of their sport can take quite a toll on your relationship, but the pros far outweigh the cons. I wish you luck with your surfer and if all else fails, remember all of your friends are probably insanely jealous of their gorgeous tan, unbelievable body and how cool it is that you’re dating a surfer.
